Ornithology is a variation of a chypre, a classical perfume structure typically characterized by a citrus opening, resinous floral heart, and mossy drydown.

In Ornithology, light and bright linden blossom stands in for the citrus, balanced by green and fruity violet leaf. But rose is the star, forming the heart with intoxicating frangipani and bracing cypress wood -- held together by a drop of styrax, the animalic liquid amber of the sweetgum tree. Oakmoss runs through the entire composition, eventually giving way to a soft white musk.
